Northern Delaware,
the region north of the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal, has
accommodated extensive industry and commerce. The region,
located along the Delaware River, has easy access for trading
and commerce. In the mid 18th century, Wilmington quickly became
a setting for small iron and textile factories, gas and water
works, and new homes for workers. Today, industries continue to
thrive in Wilmington, often referred to as "the corporate
capital of the world." Wilmington is home to over half of the
Fortune 500 companies. The city, home to more than 72,000
people, is advantageously linked to New York City, Washington DC
and the rest of the east coast by three major interstate
highways and Amtrak's main east coast line.
Commerce and
development south of the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal has
remained predominantly agriculturally based.
