DEHUG GOALS:

The DEHUG provides a focal point for HAZUS MH/GIS users in Delaware to discuss use of HAZUS MH. DEHUG is a forum to gather members, network, and expand usage. DEHUG seeks to foster a cooperative venture between public and private organizations that use HAZUS MH software and technology in order to build disaster resistant communities in the state of Delaware.

DELAWARE GEOLOGY AND INFRASTRUCTURE:

Delaware can be separated into two distinct physiographic provinces: the Appalachian Piedmont and the Atlantic Coastal Plain. The Fall Zone, a narrow band that crosses northernmost Delaware, is the boundary between these two provinces. The Appalachian Piedmont is characterized by highly deformed and metamorphosed rocks, remnants of an ancient orogeny that formed the Appalachian Mountain Range about 250-543 million years ago. In northern Delaware, the Appalachian Piedmont province covers approximately 82 square miles. The Coastal Plain covers 1900 square miles and consists of unconsolidated and semi-consolidated sand, silt and gravel that have eroded from the Piedmont rocks.

Northern Delaware, the region north of the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal, has accommodated extensive industry and commerce. The region, located along the Delaware River, has easy access for trading and commerce. In the mid 18th century, Wilmington quickly became a setting for small iron and textile factories, gas and water works, and new homes for workers. Today, industries continue to thrive in Wilmington, often referred to as "the corporate capital of the world." Wilmington is home to over half of the Fortune 500 companies. The city, home to more than 72,000 people, is advantageously linked to New York City, Washington DC and the rest of the east coast by three major interstate highways and Amtrak's main east coast line.

Commerce and development south of the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal has remained predominantly agriculturally based.
